Veteran Nigerian comedian, Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome popularly known Alibaba revealed on The Honest Bunch Podcast that he once gave shelter to fellow comedians Basketmouth and AY Makun when they were still new in the comedy industry. He said they lived in his boys quarters for a while.
Alibaba is considered to be one of the pioneers of stand-up comedy in Nigeria and has been a source of inspiration for many upcoming comedians. The fact that he was willing to help his fellow comedians shows his generosity and willingness to support up-and-coming talent.
Alibaba also shared some of his thoughts on the current comedy scene in Nigeria. He said that although there are a lot of talented comedians in the country, the comedy industry is still in its infancy and has a long way to go before it reaches the level of maturity seen in other countries.
Nevertheless, he remains optimistic about the future of comedy in Nigeria and believes that the next generation of comedians will take the art form to new heights. He encouraged young comedians to keep honing their craft and to be patient, as success does not come overnight.
During a recent interview, veteran Nigerian comedian Alibaba recounted how two of his contemporaries, Basketmouth and AY, once lived in the boys’ quarters of his home. “Basketmouth and AY, when you think about it, these are people who were living in BQ [boys’ quarters] with me back in the day,” he said. This fact may come as a surprise to many people, given that Basketmouth and AY are now both successful comedians in their own right. The mention of this detail provides an interesting glimpse into the early days of their careers.
With our previous report, Dnewsinfo reports that Basketmouth and AY were engaged in a 17-year-old rift until recently when the former publicly begged the latter.
Basketmouth also sent an invite to his former rival, AY, to attend his recent comedy show at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos.
