Auchi, Nigeria — Auchi Polytechnic management has dismissed claims that a student was killed during the recent Student Union Government (SUG) election, stating clearly that no fatalities occurred throughout the process.
The clarification came during a press briefing held Thursday in Auchi, where Dr. Angela Egele, Director of the Public Relations Division, addressed circulating claims that two students lost their lives during the electoral process.
Describing the reports as false, misleading, and entirely unfounded, Dr. Egele specifically referenced a statement made by former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle. Obi had reportedly alleged that two students died and several others were injured during the election.
“The attention of the management of Auchi Polytechnic has been drawn to the statement credited to Mr. Peter Obi. We wish to categorically state that these claims are inaccurate and were made without proper verification,” Egele said.
She further explained that no lives were lost and no student was shot during the exercise, which was declared inconclusive due to irregularities observed by the electoral committee. According to her, some of the videos shared online showing students running were doctored and not reflective of actual events.
Dr. Egele reassured the public that security personnel were present throughout the process to safeguard students and maintain order on campus.
She concluded by reaffirming the institution’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for all students and staff, while urging members of the public to disregard false reports and remain guided by verified information.
