The Yoruba One Voice (YOV), a prominent Yoruba diaspora organization, has urged individuals criticizing Kemi Badenoch, leader of the British Conservative Party, to desist, warning that such actions could damage Nigeria’s image.
In a statement by its General Secretary, Prince Adedokun Ademiluyi, the group condemned the attacks on Badenoch, describing her as a prominent figure who has brought pride to Nigeria as a Yoruba woman.
Ademiluyi noted that Badenoch’s recent comments, which have sparked controversy, were made in good faith and reflect the sentiments of many Nigerians abroad regarding the country’s challenges, including injustice, corruption, and insecurity.
“Kemi Badenoch is entitled to her opinion and belief. She has identified with her roots as a Yoruba woman while expressing her personal conviction that she does not believe in Nigeria. Her statement reflects the feelings of some Nigerians abroad who lack the platform to voice their concerns about the state of the nation,” Ademiluyi said.
He added, “Rather than attacking her, the Nigerian government should focus on improving the country’s image, thereby enabling Nigerians abroad to feel proud of their heritage. A figure like Kemi Badenoch, who has made a significant impact in the UK, deserves respect.”
Ademiluyi emphasized the underlying issues contributing to Nigerians’ dissatisfaction:
The “Japa” syndrome, where Nigerians seek opportunities abroad due to economic hardship and the country’s poor image.
The exodus of professionals, including over 100,000 doctors and nurses, leaving the country for better prospects.
Nigeria’s strained relationships with countries like the UAE and South Africa, where Nigerians face restrictions despite historical support provided by Nigeria.
Ademiluyi also called attention to the global community’s perception of Nigeria, stating, “Why are Nigerians relinquishing their citizenship for British, American, and European passports? It is not just economic challenges but the image of the country that drives such decisions.”
He urged Nigerians to view Badenoch’s remarks constructively rather than as an attack, suggesting that they offer an opportunity for reflection and growth.
“It is not in Yoruba culture to abandon our sons and daughters in times of difficulty. Kemi Badenoch is a global figure who once contested for the position of British Prime Minister. We cannot stand by and allow anyone to tarnish her image. Criticism of her only draws more global attention, which could further harm Nigeria’s reputation,” Ademiluyi said.
