Atiku Meets Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Avoids Political talks

Abeokuta, Nigeria   —  Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta on Monday, but remained tight-lipped on political matters, despite growing speculation about potential alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku, who arrived at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) at 12:36 p.m., was accompanied by former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke, ex-Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and Senator Abdul Ningi.

The delegation was welcomed by Obasanjo’s associate, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, before heading into a closed-door meeting with the former president, which lasted approximately one and a half hours.

Emerging at 2:11 p.m., Atiku briefly addressed journalists, describing the visit as a courtesy call but firmly refused to engage in political discussions.

“It’s just a courtesy visit, please. I am not going to talk about politics,” he stated in response to reporters’ persistent inquiries.

The visit comes amid growing reports that Atiku and opposition figures are exploring coalition strategies to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 elections. While Atiku has not publicly confirmed these discussions, sources indicate that political negotiations are underway.

Obasanjo, known for his role in past political realignments, has yet to comment on the meeting. The development continues to generate speculation across Nigeria’s political landscape.
