The Lagos State University (LASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite strike, protesting the state government’s failure to implement the federal government-approved salary increment of 25% and 35% for its members since January 2023. This decision follows the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration’s refusal to implement the increase, despite its implementation in all federal universities and 18 state universities universities .
According to the union, the strike action is in conformity with the decision of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all staff unions in the university. A formal letter has been sent to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and Governor Sanwo-Olu, notifying them of the strike. The union has also dismissed claims that only ASUU is embarking on the strike, emphasizing that the action is total and involves other unions .
Furthermore, the union is calling on the Lagos State Government to harmonize its members’ salary scale with that of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) and the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), which reportedly earn more than their counterparts in LASU .
