The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of an impending indefinite strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill the 2009 agreement. Prof. Timothy Namo, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator for the union, made this announcement at a news conference on Friday in Jos.
Namo stated that following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on August 17 and 18, the union issued a 21-day ultimatum.
As it stands, the government has not addressed any of our agreements or concerns.
After the initial 21-day ultimatum expired, we issued a second 14-day ultimatum starting September 23.
We want Nigerians to hold the federal government accountable if ASUU is forced to go on strike and close public universities,” he said.
Namo pointed out several ongoing issues, including the unfinished renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, the unpaid three-and-a-half months of salaries for academic staff, outstanding payments for adjunct faculty, and unresolved third-party deductions.
He also mentioned poor funding for the revitalization of public universities, the non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) outlined in the 2023 budget, the oversaturation of universities, and the lack of implementation of visitation panel reports, among other concerns.
