The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Tarara State University, TSU, has once again called upon the state government to tackle the array of issues affecting the institution.
During a press conference in Jalingo, on Thursday, ASUU-TSU highlighted the lack of a pension scheme as one of the major challenges facing the university.
Led by Chairman Dr Garba Mbave Joshua, the union stressed the severe impact of this absence on the welfare and livelihoods of academic staff, particularly the families of deceased members.
“The absence of a pension scheme for the university’s staff is deeply concerning,” remarked Dr Joshua during the conference.
ASUU-TSU also expressed alarm over the prolonged delay in salary disbursements, citing its exacerbating effects on members’ financial well-being.
The union also voiced frustration over the extended delay in the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) since 2014, underscoring its detrimental effects on staff morale and institutional harmony.
Dr Joshua lamented, “The prolonged delay in salary disbursements has exacerbated the financial strain on our members, pushing them into distress and uncertainty.”
The union also highlighted the issue of unpaid promotion arrears, which has caused discontent and eroded trust in the institution’s fairness and integrity among its members.
Another pressing concern raised by ASUU-TSU is the lack of a perimeter fence around the university campus, posing significant security risks. Incidents of attacks on both staff and students have heightened concerns about the safety of the university community.
They emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues and warned that failure to do so may compel the union to take further action, including potential work stoppages.
“The incomplete perimeter fence poses security risks, with reports of attacks on staff and students,” stated Dr. Joshua.
The union urged the state government to take immediate steps to rectify the issues to ensure the well-being and safety of the university community.
