In an effort to boost food production and support communities affected by violent conflicts, the Plateau State government-owned ASTC has cultivated 900 hectares of land in 14 areas. These communities, spread across Riyom, Barkin Ladi, and Mangu, were severely impacted by recent attacks, leading to the displacement of residents and destruction of farms.
The farming intervention comes as a relief for the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs), who had been concerned about their food security during their stay in temporary camps. The ASTC’s initiative was directed by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, aiming to make use of the remaining rain-fed season.
The Agro Rangers of the NSCDC are providing protection for the cultivated farms to prevent intruders from causing further damage. The gesture has been warmly received by the communities, with expressions of gratitude for the support in restoring their livelihoods. Some farmers, however, seek additional assistance to recover from their losses and repay loans used for farm investments.
