New York, USA— The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) spotlight Afrobeats as a global musical force, with Nigerian and African stars dominating the Best Afrobeats category for the ceremony set on September 8 at New York’s UBS Arena.
Nigerian superstar Asake leads the Afrobeats nominations with two nods for his collaborations: “Active” with American rapper Travis Scott and “Get It Right” alongside acclaimed singer Tems. These tracks exemplify Afrobeats’ fusion with global pop and its growing international appeal.
Burna Boy also garners two nominations—his track “TaTaTa” featuring Travis Scott is nominated for Best Afrobeats, while “Higher” earns a nod in the socially conscious Video for Good category, highlighting his blend of powerful messaging with mainstream success.
South African breakout star Tyla shines with two nominations for “PUSH 2 START,” recognized both for Best Afrobeats and Best Choreography, showcasing her dynamic artistry and dance influence.
Other prominent nominees include Rema for “Baby (Is It A Crime),” Wizkid featuring Brent Faiyaz on the soulful “Piece Of My Heart,” and Ghanaian artist MOLIY with Silent Addy, Skillibeng, and Shenseea for the remix “Shake It To The Max (FLY).”
These nominations reflect Afrobeats’ rich diversity and global reach, with collaborations crossing continents and musical cultures.
The VMAs, broadcast on MTV (DStv Channel 130) at midnight WAT, underscore Afrobeats’ meteoric rise as it reshapes the worldwide music landscape and solidifies Africa’s voice in global pop culture.
