Arsenal Beat Brentford 3-1, Cut Liverpool’s Lead to 6 Points

Arsenal staged a commanding comeback to secure a 3-1 victory over Brentford in their New Year opener on Wednesday.

Trailing early, Mikel Arteta’s side rallied with goals from Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino, and Gabriel Martinelli to cut Liverpool’s lead at the Premier League summit to six points. The Gunners now sit on 39 points, strengthening their title pursuit.

Brentford took the lead in the 13th minute when Bryan Mbeumo capitalised on Martin Odegaard’s error. The Cameroonian forward darted into Arsenal’s penalty area, skillfully shifted to his left foot, and delivered a precise low strike past David Raya.

Arsenal responded in the 29th minute. Gabriel Jesus pounced on a rebound, heading the ball into the net after Brentford’s goalkeeper had parried Thomas Partey’s effort.

The Gunners gained momentum in the second half, taking the lead through Mikel Merino in the 50th minute. The Spanish midfielder volleyed home after Brentford failed to clear a corner.

Just three minutes later, Gabriel Martinelli extended the lead. The Brazilian forward finished decisively inside the box after Ethan Nwaneri’s cross was only partially cleared by Brentford’s defense.

The victory ensures Arsenal remain firmly in contention, showcasing their resilience and determination to challenge for the Premier League title.
