Army clean site of Ikeja cantoment bomb blast after 21 years

The Nigerian Army have conducted an exercise that involved the clearing of remnants of Unexploded Ordinances (UXO) from the site of the unfortunate bomb incident in Lagos.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja said, last Sunday marked 260 months and 12 days since the unfortunate ‘Ikeja Cantonment Bomb Blast of January 28, 2002, after which lives were lost, properties destroyed, blames were traded, inquiries were made, and lessons were learnt.

Lieutenant General Lagbaja noted that from those lessons, the army vowed that such a tragedy would never happen again in any of its cantonments, pointing out that 21 years later, the losses suffered were still fresh in their memories.

The Chief of Army Staff explained that the initial clearance ensured some degrees of safety in the Ikeja Cantonment and its surroundings as the recent discovery of some Unexploded Explosive Ordinance at the site of the 2002 blast, raised the need for the Nigerian Army to carry out a follow-up clearance

On his part the Commander Corp of Engineers Nigerian Army, Major General Philip Eromosele, stated that the Nigerian Army Engineers, alongside other stakeholders, carried out an initial clearance, recovering and disposing of over 105 truckloads of unexploded explosive ordinances.

Major General Eromosele said that the Exercise clean sweep was organized in four phases, including Mobilization, Vegetation clearance, Search/Recovery/Disposal, and Demobilization.

The objective of Exercise Clean Sweep involved a total disinfecting of the epicenter of the Ikeja bomb blast and clearing of all verified and suspected remaining Unexploded Explosive Ordnance.
