The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a violent attack on its 330/132/33kV transmission substation construction site in Obajana, Kogi State, by unidentified armed men. The incident took place late Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at approximately 11:55 p.m., according to TCN’s General Manager for Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.
According to Mbah, security personnel stationed at the site disclosed that the attackers approached the facility and immediately began shooting indiscriminately. The guards, overwhelmed by the sudden assault, fled the premises to ensure their safety.
During the attack, a 150MVA 330/132/33kV power transformer, already installed on its plinth at the construction site, was struck by gunfire, which caused significant damage to the equipment. The radiator on the transformer burst as a result of the impact, raising concerns about potential setbacks in the project timeline due to the damaged equipment.
Following the attack, TCN stated that it is currently assessing the extent of the damage in cooperation with the contractor responsible for the substation project. This evaluation is essential to determine the repairs needed to continue the project without further delays.
The TCN spokesperson emphasized that this incident is part of a disturbing pattern of vandalism and attacks targeting power transmission infrastructure across Nigeria. Such acts not only threaten the safety of personnel and security staff but also delay projects aimed at improving power supply and distribution.
The Obajana Transmission Substation project, which is expected to deliver a 1X150MVA 330/132/33kV capacity, represents a significant step forward in strengthening power reliability for Kogi State and neighboring areas. Upon completion, the substation is projected to enhance electricity distribution, boost regional economic activity, and support surrounding communities with a more stable power supply. TCN has called for enhanced security around critical infrastructure sites to prevent further incidents and ensure that projects critical to Nigeria’s energy needs remain on track.
