Makuku, Kebbi— The Kebbi State Government has confirmed a major security breach after armed bandits attacked a mobile police post in Makuku, Zuru Local Government Area, making off with several rifles.
Abdulrahman Zagga, Director of Security at the Cabinet Office, told reporters on Saturday that the post, manned by visiting officers, came under intense assault by a group of bandits estimated to number over 300. Despite a fierce gunfight, the police were eventually overwhelmed and forced to retreat.
During the attack, the assailants set fire to a Toyota Hilux patrol vehicle and escaped with at least eight AK-47 rifles belonging to the unit. Zagga clarified that contrary to some reports, the target was a temporary mobile post, not a permanent police station.
The state government, upon learning of the incident, requested air support from the Nigerian Air Force, which helped drive the bandits away. No casualties were reported among the officers, but the attackers—many of whom reportedly infiltrated from neighboring Zamfara and Niger States—managed to evade capture.
Makuku’s proximity to the Niger State border makes it especially vulnerable to such raids. Zagga emphasized that Kebbi State, unlike some neighbors, has no peace deals with bandit groups and continues to face challenges from informants and seasonal spikes in attacks, especially during the rainy season when extortion of farming communities is common.
Security forces have launched search and rescue operations and are tracking the attackers’ escape routes. As of press time, Kebbi State Police spokesperson CSP Nafiu Abubakar was unavailable for comment.
