Madrid, Spain — Former Arsenal and Real Madrid star Mesut Özil has called on referees to ensure the protection of young talent Arda Güler from rough challenges on the field
Özil made this appeal during an interview with Turkish media, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding promising players from reckless tackles that could hinder their growth.
Despite limited game time at Real Madrid this season, Güler remains one of Europe’s most exciting young talents. Özil, a World Cup-winning playmaker, expressed confidence in Güler’s potential to achieve great success.
“When I look at football right now, I am in a period where I do not enjoy it very much,” Özil remarked. “There were big names in my time, but right now, I think Arda Güler is like me.”
He further stressed the need for proper support and protection for rising stars like Güler and Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, urging the football community to rally behind them.
“Whether they play well or struggle, there is nothing they cannot achieve when their nation is behind them,” he said.
Özil’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate about officiating standards and the responsibility of referees to shield young players from unnecessary harm, ensuring they have the opportunity to develop into world-class talents.
