The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, has raised concerns about the competence of the Commissioners of Police in Delta and Imo states following recent attacks on police officers in the country. Arase condemned the assaults and emphasized that the slain officers were also citizens deserving support and protection.
In a statement released by the commission’s spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani, it was revealed that six officers were killed in an ambush in Delta State by armed assailants. The officers were investigating the disappearance of their colleagues in the Ohoro Forest. Additionally, two police operatives were killed in Imo State by gunmen who engaged them in a gunfight.
Arase expressed worry over the increasing killings in various states and called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to assess the leadership capacity of state commands. He emphasized the need for consequences for incompetence among state Commissioners of Police to prevent further casualties.
The commission extended condolences to the Inspector-General of Police and the families of the slain officers. Arase urged state command commissioners to enhance intelligence policing and encouraged serving officers to remain resilient in the face of these challenges.
