Appeal court Halts Reinstatement of Sanusi as Emir of Kano.

Nigeria: The Court of Appeal in Abuja has suspended the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, pending a final decision from the Supreme Court

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has suspended the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, pending a final decision from the Supreme Court. This ruling temporarily halts the January 10 judgment that reversed the nullification of Sanusi’s reappointment.

The appellate court’s decision was made in consideration of applications CA/KN/27M/2025 and CA/KN/28M/2025, which argued that enforcement of Sanusi’s reinstatement should be paused until the Supreme Court makes a final determination. Justice Okon Abang emphasized the need to preserve the case, highlighting Sanusi’s prior tenure as Emir for five years before his removal in 2020.

The Kano State Government’s decision to reinstate Sanusi has been met with opposition from Emir Ado Bayero and his supporters, who claim that due process was not followed. The Federal High Court in Kano had initially nullified the law, ruling that the state government’s actions were unconstitutional. However, the Court of Appeal found that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction over the chieftaincy dispute.
