Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Chief Tony Okocha, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has insisted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who is currently under suspension, cannot join the party without adhering to proper procedures.
Speaking during a live radio broadcast monitored in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Okocha emphasized that no individual—regardless of status—should attempt to join the APC through unofficial channels.
“Just like every Nigerian, he’s free to join any political party — that’s constitutional,” Okocha noted. “But, I say this clearly: anyone, including the suspended governor, must come through the proper channel — not through the window.”
He stressed that party membership begins at the grassroots level, not the national office, citing the political maxim that “politics is local.”
“There are laid-down steps,” he explained. “Nobody becomes a member of APC by going straight to the national level. It all begins at your ward, where you must officially enroll. That’s the legitimate entry point.”
Okocha also referenced the party’s experience during the 2023 general elections, pointing out that APC is wary of admitting individuals who may destabilize the party or join it for selfish reasons.
“What we went through in 2023 is still fresh,” he warned. “We don’t want a repeat of that in 2027. We’re focused on safeguarding the party’s unity and direction.”
His comments come amid speculations about potential political realignments in Rivers State, with rumors swirling about Fubara’s interest in switching parties amid ongoing political tensions.
