APC, PDP Clash Over State of Emergency Call in Zamfara

The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for urging the federal government to declare a state of emergency in the state, intensifying the political debate surrounding Zamfara’s ongoing security crisis.

The APC’s call, made on Saturday, was driven by concerns over persistent security challenges in the state. However, PDP’s state publicity secretary, Haliru Andi, condemned the move, calling it “deeply disrespectful” to the people of Zamfara.

In a statement, Andi said, “The call by the factional APC, led by former Governor Bello Matawalle and Senator Abdulaziz Yari, is a sign of their fear of the developmental progress under Governor Dauda Lawal’s leadership.” He described the call for a state of emergency as baseless, arguing that it was a political tactic aimed at undermining the governor’s efforts to combat banditry.

“Governor Lawal is the first in Zamfara’s history to genuinely prioritize security, unlike the previous APC administrations, which politicized the issue,” Andi stated. He maintained that the PDP administration remains dedicated to achieving peace and stability in the state.

In contrast, the APC, through its publicity secretary Yusuf Idris, defended its position, stating that the people of Zamfara had lost confidence in Governor Lawal’s ability to manage the security situation. Idris called on President Bola Tinubu to implement a state of emergency, praising the ongoing military operations against bandits in the North-West, which are coordinated by Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.

“The military’s efforts under Tinubu’s direction have been yielding unprecedented results, and it is crucial to sustain this momentum,” Idris said. He accused Governor Lawal of attempting to sabotage these efforts through media campaigns and a lack of logistical support for the military.

Idris further claimed that Governor Lawal had distanced himself from the military’s operations, despite previous warnings from the armed forces to avoid interfering. “Lawal is distracting the federal government’s efforts with propaganda while compromising the safety of innocent Zamfara citizens for political gain,” he alleged.

The APC concluded by reiterating its call for a state of emergency to prevent the governor from hindering military operations, urging the federal government to take decisive action to protect the state from further insecurity.
