APC, Machukwu-Ume, APBPI Applaud Local Government Autonomy

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has praised the Supreme Court’s decision affirming the right of local government councils to receive their monthly allocations directly from the federation account.

In a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Felix Morka, the ruling marks a historic step in strengthening democratic federalism in Nigeria. Morka emphasized that the judgment gives practical effect to the constitutional recognition of local government councils as the third tier of government.

“We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ingenuity, vision, and commitment to deepening our democracy and transforming local government councils into strongholds for development and efficient service delivery at the grassroots,” the statement read.

In a related development, Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Attorney General of Imo State, Chukwuma Machukwu-Ume, has called on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, to advocate for full financial autonomy and independence of the Judiciary.

In a congratulatory message to the AGF on the Supreme Court judgment granting fiscal autonomy to Nigeria’s 774 local government councils, Machukwu-Ume urged Prince Fagbemi to push for similar autonomy for the Judiciary. He expressed hope that Fagbemi would use his wisdom, vision, and strength to achieve independence for the Courts and State Houses of Assembly during his tenure.

Machukwu-Ume praised Fagbemi’s bold actions as rejuvenating the true intentions of the Nigerian Constitution regarding local government autonomy. He expressed optimism that these measures would lead to a more functional and meaningful federalism, benefiting future generations of Nigerians.

Additionally, the Advocacy for Positive Behavioral Patterns Initiatives (APBPI) has lauded the Federal Government and the Supreme Court for the landmark judgment affirming the constitutional rights of local governments.

In a statement, the advocacy group described the decision as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria’s federal structure and ensuring effective grassroots governance. The organization emphasized that the judgment provides local government leaders the opportunity to deliver people-oriented services, thereby making a tangible impact on Nigerians at the grassroots level.

APBPI reaffirmed its commitment to promoting good behavior, accountability, transparency, and responsiveness in governance.
