Anambra state, Nigeria: Traders at Oyeagu Market in Abagana, Anambra State, are urging Governor Charles Soludo to intervene in the demolition of their shops, which they claim were legitimately acquired
The traders allege that the Njikoka Local Government’s eviction order, citing market reorganization and renovations, is unjust and has not provided alternative arrangements for them.
The affected traders, including a 65-year-old widow, Comfort Anunyaba, expressed concerns about losing their businesses and livelihoods. Anunyaba recounted her struggles to acquire the shop in 2005 and the subsequent renovations made based on directives from previous administrations. The traders also accused local government officials of exploiting the situation for personal gain and using thugs to intimidate protesters.
This development comes after a similar incident in Onitsha, where the Anambra State Government demolished over 2,000 shops, displacing around 4,000 people, as part of its efforts to tackle illegal structures and building collapses.
