Anambra state, Nigeria: The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed a decisive clampdown on unlawful gatherings and cult-related activities, particularly in student-dominated areas, in response to rising incidents of cult supremacy clashes across the state.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the directive follows intelligence reports indicating that the Neo-Black Movement of Africa may be planning to hold meetings and initiations on Monday, July 7, which could potentially lead to public disorder and retaliatory attacks among rival groups.
In response, CP Orutugu has intensified security deployments through the School Protection Squad, ordering officers to take proactive and offensive positions in areas with high student populations to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“The Commissioner has also called on hotel owners, bar operators, and managers of lounge facilities or studio apartments to refuse the use of their premises for any illegal assembly or cult-related gathering,” Ikenga stated.
He further disclosed that the police strategy includes covert surveillance and increased presence around motor parks, tricycle (keke) hubs, and other identified hotspots to preempt any criminal activity.
The School Protection Squad, an initiative of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is designed to safeguard educational institutions, students, and school infrastructure across the country.
The police command has urged the general public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities or gatherings to the nearest police station or through designated Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers.
“The Command remains committed to maintaining peace and ensuring a secure environment for all residents of Anambra State,” the statement added.
