In a vibrant celebration of storytelling and cinematic brilliance, Nigerian filmmaker Chinenye ‘Chichi’ Nworah’s Slum King, the series which captivated the pan-African audience with its gripping narrative and raw portrayal of life’s complexities, has clinched the prestigious Best Scripted M-net Original category at the 2024 edition of Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
At the helm of Giant Creative Studios, Chichi Nworah, known for her trailblazing works such as Shanty Town, Omoge Suzzy, and Fairytale Wedding, has once again demonstrated her exceptional talent and vision, and a testament to her dedication to creating content that resonates deeply with movie fans.
In her acceptance speech, Nworah expressed her gratitude to MultiChoice for the opportunity to bring her vision to life, emphasizing the importance of embracing one’s creative gifts and sharing unique stories with the world.
“Thank you MultiChoice for the opportunity to create this series by myself and Donald. We are glad to have this and take it home. I want to tell everyone that if you are gifted to create, don’t be afraid to tell your story. In 2019, we started making Slum King and today, we are glad to get this award. Thank you,” she gushed in her acceptance speech.
Full of gratitude, Chichi took to her social media pages to express more appreciation to individuals, personalities and corporations that made the ‘Slum King’ dream a reality.
Taking to social media, Nworah shared her heartfelt appreciation for the cast, crew, and everyone who supported her journey from ‘Shanty Town’ to ‘Slum King.’ She also teased upcoming projects, promising more exciting content on the horizon.
In 2023, Nworah’s Netflix original limited series, ‘Shanty Town,’ garnered global acclaim and numerous awards, further cementing her reputation as a leading figure in the international film scene. The series won Chichi several accolades and respect in the Nigerian and international film scene. It got ten nominations at the 2023 AMVCA.
Shanty Town, a gritty crime thriller, also ranked as the most-streamed Netflix African Original in Nigeria, and the second most-streamed across the continent, according to the streaming platform’s first-ever ‘What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report’ which covers hours viewed from January to June 2023.
The filmmaker’s journey from Shanty Town to Slum King has been one of continuous growth and evolution. With each project, she has honed her craft, pushing the boundaries of storytelling and pushing the envelope with themes of social justice and human resilience.
