In a legal proceeding at the Zonal Chief Magistrates’ Court in New Karu, Nasarawa State, the police presented charges against Alice Odey, 27, and Blessing Onagbulum, 39, residents of New Nyanya, Karu.
The accusations stem from an alleged physical altercation resulting in injuries on February 14.
The defendants faced charges of breaching public peace, character defamation, and causing harm, to which they entered pleas of not guilty.
Inspector Shehu Ndam, the prosecutor, disclosed that the women were apprehended on February 14 after engaging in a fight, resulting in injuries, at the New Nyanya Police Station.
Ndam detailed the origin of the dispute, stating that Onagbulum accused Odey of romantically entwining with her former spouse. In retaliation, Odey accused Onagbulum of employing mystical practices to diminish her ex-husband’s private anatomy.
The confrontation escalated, leading to Odey using a broken bottle to inflict head, jaw, and neck wounds on Onagbulum. Notably, Onagbulum’s 16-year-old daughter intervened, striking Odey in the eye with a stone.
The charges levied against the defendants are in violation of sections 113, 139, and 245 of the Penal Code. Judge Godiya Bawa granted each defendant bail in the amount of N100,000 along with one surety each, setting the next court appearance for March 15 for further proceedings.
