The office of the Inspector General of Police has issued a warning about the fraudulent exploitation of the Inspector General’s office by certain police personnel for the purpose of extorting the public.
This concern was revealed through a press statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, based at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
ACP Adejobi expressed the Force’s apprehension regarding the ongoing unprofessional behavior exhibited by some police officers, which undermines the standards and credibility of the Nigeria Police Force. Despite prior warnings and disciplinary measures taken against those exposed, there are still officers engaging in disgraceful acts that tarnish the public’s trust.
Of particular concern is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector General of Police by some personnel to carry out illegal actions. This deceitful tactic aims to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware of and sanctions their illicit activities, thereby dissuading them from reporting such incidents to relevant authorities.
Members of the public have been advised to report any misconduct by police officers to their superiors, the Heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their respective states, or the Commissioner of Police in their region. Contact details for the CRUs in all states have been previously published for easy access.
In light of these incidents, ACP Adejobi urged caution amongst the public when approached by officers or individuals claiming association with the IGP or other senior figures within the police force for the purpose of securing favors or influence. Any such encounters should be promptly reported to the Nigeria Police Force using the provided contact information for relevant authorities.
The statement emphasized the Police Force’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest levels of integrity and professionalism, urging the public to collaborate by reporting any suspicious activities to ensure that justice and fairness prevail at all times.
