Ibadan, Nigeria — The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, has dismissed reports suggesting he is engaged in a supremacy tussle with any traditional ruler, declaring that he has no such conflict either within Yorubaland or beyond.
The monarch made this known on Thursday through a statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
According to the statement, Oba Owoade remains a custodian of Yoruba culture and tradition whose leadership is guided by the safety, welfare, and prosperity of his subjects.
“The Alaafin does not need to get into any battle for supremacy with any Oba, either in Yorubaland or anywhere in the universe,” Durojaiye stressed, noting that the monarch has always relied on the will and wishes of his people.
The release further emphasized that the Alaafin would never compromise the tradition, culture, or development of his people “for a pot of porridge,” adding that his reign has been marked by humility, cultural preservation, and an unyielding commitment to the growth of Oyo.
Tracing the historic role of the Alaafin, the statement highlighted Oyo’s prominence as a leading Yoruba kingdom, recognized for its cultural authority and political legitimacy dating back to the Oduduwa dynasty. It also recalled how the British colonial government acknowledged the Alaafin as the superior head of the Yoruba nation during treaty negotiations.
Reaffirming his covenant with the ancestors, the statement described Oba Owoade as a monarch dedicated to protecting and promoting Yoruba heritage while adapting to modern-day governance needs.
