Alaafin Dispute: Gbadegesin Challenges Owoade’s Appointment

Oyo, NigeriaPrince Lukman Gbadegesin, a key contender for the revered Alaafin of Oyo throne, has legally challenged the Oyo State Government’s proclamation of Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the new monarch.

In a lawsuit filed at the Oyo State High Court on February 12, Gbadegesin seeks the nullification of Owoade’s appointment, citing violations of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000, and the Registered Alaafin Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961. He also requests a court injunction to prevent Owoade from assuming royal responsibilities.

The suit names Oyo State Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, the Attorney General of Oyo State, and 11 others as defendants, compelling them to respond within 30 days. Gbadegesin argues that the governor’s swift approval of Owoade’s selection within five days was unlawful and invalid.

The aggrieved prince insists that he had been rightfully chosen by the Oyomesi (the kingmakers) before Governor Makinde’s controversial pronouncement of another candidate. According to him, the proper selection process was not followed, as legitimate kingmakers were sidelined.

His legal counsel, Kunle Sobaloju (SAN), asserts that Gbadegesin’s nomination was lawful, urging the court to declare him the rightful occupant of the Alaafin throne. The suit also demands that the state government immediately recognize and approve his appointment.

Additionally, Gbadegesin seeks a court order preventing the state and relevant authorities from acknowledging Owoade as the Alaafin or granting him any benefits associated with the position. He further requests the annulment of Owoade’s selection and the withdrawal of any official recognition.

The legal battle follows a pre-action notice served to the governor, emphasizing that the state’s decision contradicts established chieftaincy laws. Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government and Oba Owoade have set up committees for the coronation, scheduled for April 5.
