Ondo State Governor, Hon Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has directed the Ministry of Infrastructure to rehabilitate the alternative road into the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko campus.
The Governor gave the directive when he paid an unscheduled visit to the university to assess some of the challenges the institution’s students face.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Olugbenga Ige, conducted the Governor round the main gate and the alternative route into the school.
The university community has been using the alternative road leading to the second gate of the school after the main entrance was shut due to the continued loss of lives due to accidents along the gate.
The VC informed the Governor that recent efforts to rehabilitate the alternative road have proved abortive, while management has opened more routes for staff and students’ ease of commuting.
After the tour, the governor ordered the road repaired, adding that his administration would develop plans to improve the infrastructure and security of lives in and around the university.
“There have been a series of accidents near the university due to the road’s topography, where vehicles, particularly trucks and lorries, lose control and run into the school gate area, resulting in tragic losses of lives.
“We are now working on creating alternative routes for heavy vehicles, which will be included in our budget. Our goal is to enhance the safety and quality of life for the university community, which comprises over 20,000 students. We are committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and amenities to support them,” the Governor added.
