Abuja ,Nigeria: As the global aviation sector marks World Aeronautical Information Service Day (WAISD), the Aeronautical Information Management Association of Nigeria (AIMAN) has called on the federal government to reconsider its 50% revenue deduction policy from aviation agencies, citing its adverse effects on safety and operational development.
Speaking on the occasion, AIMAN President Dr. Ibrahim Audu emphasized that the current financial constraints have hindered the replacement of outdated infrastructure and stalled key initiatives, particularly the long-delayed automation of Nigeria’s Aeronautical Information Services (AIS)—a critical component for enhancing aviation safety and efficiency.
Dr. Audu drew attention to this year’s WAISD theme, “Safeguarding the Skies: The Vital Role of Secured Aeronautical Information in Aviation Safety,” noting that Nigeria continues to lag behind regional peers in AIS modernization. He warned that inadequate investment could disrupt the timely flow of vital aeronautical data to pilots and air traffic controllers.
He further stressed that full automation of AIS would enable the deployment of essential tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), and automated weather observation systems. While acknowledging the efforts of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in upgrading legacy systems, he maintained that comprehensive AIS automation remains both urgent and overdue.
In highlighting internal progress, Dr. Audu also announced achievements by AIMAN’s licensing committee, aimed at enhancing the professionalism of AIS personnel and fostering greater confidence within the industry.
Ahead of Nigeria’s hosting of the International Federation of Aeronautical Information Management Associations (IFAIMA) Conference in 2025, Dr. Audu stated that this year’s WAISD would be celebrated at the station level nationwide. He encouraged all members to actively participate and reaffirmed AIMAN’s dedication to aligning with ICAO standards and promoting excellence in global air navigation.
