AI, Digitalisation Pivotal to Safer Workplaces — ISPON Chair

Nigeria: The Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Mr. Olusola Ogunleye, has underscored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in advancing occupational health and safety standards across Nigerian workplaces.

Addressing journalists in Lagos during a press briefing to commemorate the International Labour Organisation’s 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work (WDSHW), themed “Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation at Work,” Mr. Ogunleye noted that conventional safety approaches are increasingly inadequate in addressing the complexities of today’s work environments.

He advocated for the strategic integration of AI and digital solutions to enhance workplace efficiency and safety, while calling on government agencies, industries, and academic institutions to collaborate in navigating the associated technological, ethical, and privacy challenges.

“To truly revolutionise workplace safety, we must invest in training, adopt safe and reliable AI systems, and establish clear regulatory frameworks,” he stated.

The ISPON chairman also emphasised the need for expanded research and cross-sector collaboration to tackle emerging risks stemming from digital transformation. He called for the ethical and inclusive deployment of AI technologies, strengthened regulatory compliance, and improved access to energy and digital infrastructure.

Mr. Ogunleye concluded that through coordinated efforts, Nigeria can harness the full potential of AI and digitalisation to foster a safer and more innovative workplace culture.

In a related development, ISPON announced plans to launch a dedicated aviation chapter aimed at bolstering safety standards within the country’s aviation sector.
