AGF Affirms Legality of IGP Egbetokun’s Extended Tenure

Abuja, NigeriaThe Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, has clarified the legality of the extended tenure of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, dispelling concerns over his mandatory retirement age.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Fagbemi confirmed that Egbetokun’s appointment, which began on *October 31, 2023*, remains valid for a full four-year term, in line with statutory provisions.

The clarification came amidst public discourse regarding the IGP’s upcoming 60th birthday on September 4, 2024, which typically marks the mandatory retirement age for public service.

Addressing the concerns, Fagbemi highlighted recent amendments to the Police Act, which permit the IGP to serve out the entirety of his four-year tenure regardless of age.

“Under the revised provisions of Section 7(6) of the Act, the IGP is entitled to a full four-year tenure, irrespective of his attainment of the age of 60 years,” Fagbemi stated.

The AGF further affirmed that this amendment effectively extends Egbetokun’s tenure until October 31, 2027, allowing him to fulfill his statutory obligations as the nation’s top police officer.

“This statutory clarification ensures that Egbetokun remains in office until October 2027, completing his four-year tenure as mandated by law,” Fagbemi added.

The AGF emphasized that the clarification was necessary to ensure public understanding and reaffirm the government’s adherence to the rule of law.

The statement concluded with a reassurance of the administration’s commitment to legal transparency and institutional stability.
