Africa CDC Urges 10 Million Vaccine Doses to Combat Mpox Outbreak

The Africa Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) has announced that over 10 million vaccine doses are needed to effectively manage the Mpox outbreak, which has now spread to 13 countries across the continent.

Currently, only about 200,000 doses are available, leaving a shortfall of 9.8 million doses. Dr. Jean Kaseya, the Director-General of Africa CDC, addressed this issue during a virtual briefing, pledging that efforts will be made to swiftly augment the vaccine supply.

In response to the escalating crisis, Africa CDC has declared the Mpox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS). Dr. Kaseya emphasized that this declaration aims to mobilize resources and partnerships, enhance health systems, and implement critical interventions. He also noted that there is no immediate need for travel restrictions.

Mpox, a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus, presents with symptoms such as skin rashes, mucosal lesions, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. It spreads through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or animals.

The outbreak has led to 2,863 reported cases and 517 deaths, predominantly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Africa CDC reports a sharp increase in suspected cases across the continent, exceeding 17,000, up from 7,146 in 2022 and 14,957 in 2023.

Previously, from May 2022 to July 2023, Mpox was classified as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organisation (WHO). However, Africa’s urgent needs were not met during this period, and the continent’s rising numbers were largely overlooked as global cases declined.

Dr. Kaseya urged international partners to enhance their support: “We call on our global partners to collaborate more closely with Africa CDC, providing the necessary aid and expertise. The fight against Mpox is a global responsibility, and Africa requires your solidarity and support. The world must not ignore this urgent crisis.”
