Lagos, Nigeria — Adewole Adebayo, Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) 2023 presidential candidate, has sharply criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for failing to enforce electoral laws against campaign violations, particularly targeting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
On Arise TV’s PrimeTime programme, Adebayo condemned the INEC for ignoring provisions restricting electoral campaigns until 150 days before elections. He lamented that APC flagrantly violates this rule with impunity, noting widespread campaign displays featuring President Bola Tinubu and associates well ahead of the 2027 elections.
“There’s nowhere you go and you don’t see the picture of President Bola Tinubu and some members of his family already dancing and waltzing ahead of 2027,” Adebayo said. “If we want to return to regular order, the president and APC must adhere to the rules and remove those obnoxious billboards all over.”
Adebayo also challenged recent praise from World Trade Organisation Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala regarding Nigeria’s economic stabilization under Tinubu. He argued that ordinary Nigerians judge the economy through basic essentials like food, energy, rent, and education costs, which remain burdensome.
He likened the touted economic stability to a doctor who reduced patient deaths from dozens to one a week — an improvement, but far from a healthy situation. He compared Tinubu’s economic management to a pilot navigating through a storm, who has steadied the plane but has yet to find the correct course or altitude.
Adebayo criticized efforts to conceal the Central Bank of Nigeria’s heavy spending defending the naira, suggesting that the administration is masking unsustainable economic realities.
