The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State is opposing the N250,000 nomination fee introduced by the state’s Independent Electoral Commission, OGISIEC, for the upcoming local government election.
The commission announced this fee during a stakeholder meeting, stating that chairmanship candidates must pay N250,000, while male councillorship candidates are required to pay N150,000 and female candidates N100,000.
In a statement signed by the ADC chairman, Itunu Abioro, the party criticized the imposition of the fee as exorbitant and unacceptable. The party alleged that this fee is an attempt to manipulate the electoral system for personal financial gain. The ADC strongly rejected this demand by OGISIEC, stating that they will not comply with what they view as a fraudulent act.
The statement raised concerns about the transparency and fairness of the electoral process, questioning the double standards exhibited by the electoral commission.
The ADC highlighted that neither the governor nor elected members of the Ogun State House of Assembly were required to pay any money to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during their own election processes, which they contrast with the current situation. The party believes that such discriminatory practices undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
The ADC called for unity among political parties to speak out against this policy implemented by OGISIEC. They urged stakeholders, civil society organizations, and the public to condemn the alleged fraudulent actions of the electoral commission and to protect the integrity of the democratic system.
The party emphasized the importance of ensuring that the voices of the people are not stifled by extortionate practices during the electoral process.
