Activists and gubernatorial candidate detained during protest against poor governance in Ondo.

The governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the upcoming off-cycle governorship election in Ondo State, Kunle Ajayi Wizeman, was arrested along with other activists during a protest against bad governance in Akure, the state capital.

The other protesters who were arrested include Patrick Owolabi, Oluwatobi Akinkuotu, Kolawole Kumuyi, and Olalekan Oladehinde.

The protesters, including the AAC governorship candidate, had gathered at the NEPA roundabout before being approached by the Ondo State police command. The police directed them to relocate to the Gani Fawehinmi Arcade Ground, which was the approved venue for the protest. However, before reaching the arcade, the protesters were arrested by the police.

Tope Temokun, a lawyer and human rights activist in Ondo State, condemned the arrests and revealed that the police had been informed about the protest through a letter from the Take It Back movement, the organizers of the protest. Temokun called on Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa to order the release of the protesters, emphasizing that they posed no threat during their peaceful demonstration.

Temokun reiterated the citizens’ right to peacefully protest as enshrined in the constitution, expressing concern that crackdowns on such rights could lead to further loss of trust and confidence in the police and the government.

He highlighted the dire situation in the country, with citizens facing challenges such as lack of food, job opportunities, good infrastructure, health insurance, and security. He emphasized that the citizens’ right to voice their concerns should be respected, and any evidence of violence from the protesters should be substantiated by the government.

Overall, the arrests during the protest were strongly condemned by activists and calls were made for the release of the detained individuals, stressing the importance of upholding the democratic right to peaceful protest.
