Acting CJN Kekere-Ekun Vows to Reposition Judiciary

The newly appointed Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has pledged to restore public confidence in the nation’s judiciary. Following her swearing-in ceremony in Abuja, she addressed journalists, expressing her commitment to improving the judiciary’s reputation and performance.

“We aim to elevate the judiciary to greater heights and improve its reputation. We want to ensure that the people have renewed confidence in our judicial system. This is not a task for one person alone—it requires collective effort. I am confident that we will work together for a better judiciary,” Kekere-Ekun stated.

She emphasized that the enhancement of the judiciary would benefit the entire country and called for a shift in attitudes toward justice. “A stronger judiciary serves the entire nation. Whatever challenges we face, as members of society, we must all be part of the solution. Let us foster trust in the system and contribute to the improvement we seek,” she added.

Kekere-Ekun also noted that she would focus on the judicial appointment process, ensuring that both the Bar and the Bench uphold high standards, providing Nigerians with a judiciary they can take pride in.

In response to her appointment, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised President Bola Tinubu for recognizing the strategic importance of the judiciary. He described Kekere-Ekun as an exceptional jurist and encouraged her to streamline justice delivery.

On Friday, President Tinubu swore in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd and second female Chief Justice of Nigeria in an acting capacity, pending Senate confirmation. She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

Kekere-Ekun’s legal journey began in Lagos as a private practitioner in 1985. She was appointed Senior Magistrate Grade II in the Lagos State Judiciary in December 1989. She follows in the footsteps of Justice Maryam Aloma Mukhtar, who served as Nigeria’s first female CJN from July 2012 to November 2014.
