Abia Man Regains Freedom After 22 Years in Prison—Ogun AG

Abeokuta, Nigeria A man from Abia State has regained his freedom after spending 22 years in prison for a robbery conviction, following a review by the Ogun State Government.

The announcement was made by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ogun State, Mr. Oluwasina Ogungbade [SAN], during a press briefing held in Abeokuta.

Speaking on the case, Mr. Ogungbade disclosed that the man, who was convicted in the early 2000s, had been serving time in a correctional facility in Ogun State before recent legal and humanitarian interventions paved the way for his release.

“This is a matter of justice and compassion,” the Attorney General stated. “After thorough legal evaluation and consideration of time served, it became clear that continued incarceration was no longer in the interest of justice.”

Mr. Ogungbade emphasized the state’s commitment to judicial reform and the protection of human rights, noting that the move was part of broader efforts to decongest prisons and revisit long-standing cases.

Reflecting on the situation, he urged stakeholders to continue supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening the justice system. “Our goal is a justice system that is fair, responsive, and humane,” he added.

The Attorney General also called on citizens, civil society, and legal professionals to work together in ensuring that no individual is unjustly denied liberty due to administrative delays or lack of access to legal representation.

The Ogun State Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the rule of law and creating avenues for the reintegration of ex-inmates into society.

The statement concluded with a reassurance that the government will continue to review similar cases in pursuit of a more equitable justice system.
