Abia state, Nigeria–The Abia State Government has directed that all buildings exceeding two storeys undergo comprehensive structural integrity tests, as part of efforts to curb the rising incidents of building collapse across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia following this week’s Executive Council Meeting, chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu disclosed that the site engineer responsible for an uncompleted three-storey building that collapsed over the weekend in Umuahia has been arrested by the state police and is currently assisting with investigations.
The collapsed structure, located near the Low-Cost Housing Estate in Umuahia, is reported to be owned by prominent politician Chief Ikechi Emenike. Kanu warned that any building found lacking proper structural integrity will face strict regulatory sanctions.
As part of the government’s broader urban safety initiative, the Ministry of Lands and Housing has commenced a radar and 2D light mapping of the state, covering approximately 2,220 square kilometers, to assist in land and infrastructure assessments.
Providing updates on road infrastructure, the Commissioner noted that Abia currently has 30 ongoing road construction projects. He confirmed that the Port Harcourt Road in Aba has been completed and is ready for commissioning, with contractors working diligently to meet project timelines across the state.
Speaking on the building collapse, the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Kingsley Agomoh, confirmed that the affected site has been sealed and nearby structures built by the same engineer have been evacuated as a precaution.
Agomoh reiterated the need for strict adherence to approved building plans and professional standards, stressing the government’s zero-tolerance stance on construction malpractice.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, added that the outcome of the ongoing investigation will determine liability, assuring that those found culpable will be held accountable.
