Ifon, Ondo State — The political community in Ondo State has been thrown into mourning following the killing of Mr. Nelson Adepoyigi, Ward 5 Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ose Local Government Area, by suspected kidnappers.
Despite efforts by his family to secure his release through ransom negotiations, Adepoyigi was murdered by his captors, confirming fears of growing insecurity in the region.
The politician was abducted from his home along Ifon-Owo Road in Ifon on Monday of the previous week. Initial ransom demands by the kidnappers stood at ₦100 million, but were later reduced to ₦5 million following discussions.
He paid tribute to the deceased as a committed grassroots leader who played a vital role in the growth of the APC in the area.
“His loyalty, sacrifice, and service to both the party and our community will never be forgotten. This tragedy is yet another painful reminder of the deteriorating state of security in our country,” Ojo lamented.
He recalled a recent near-kidnapping of another resident near his home, calling attention to the increasing boldness of criminal elements operating in the area.
“Criminals are now striking at people’s doorsteps. It’s a grim indicator that the security situation has reached an intolerable level,” he added.
In a cruel turn of events, two individuals who delivered the ransom were also seized by the gang, with a new demand of ₦30 million placed on their freedom.
According to local sources, the kidnappers executed Mr. Adepoyigi and released the two other victims on Friday evening.
Hon. Clement Ojo, Chairman of Ose Local Government, confirmed the incident in a solemn statement, describing the killing as “a devastating and deeply painful loss.”
“While we thank God for the safe return of the two individuals who went to negotiate his release, it is heartbreaking that Mr. Adepoyigi was not spared,” Ojo said.
The council boss emphasized the urgent need for intelligence-driven security action, calling on federal, state, and local authorities to synergize efforts in fortifying vulnerable communities.
Ojo also pressed for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, insisting that justice must be served.
“The lives of our people are sacred and must be protected at all costs. We cannot afford to let fear take root in our communities,” he stated.
He reiterated the commitment of the local government to collaborate with security agencies and community stakeholders to curb criminal activity and restore peace.
Urging residents to stay alert and promptly report suspicious activity, Ojo called for collective vigilance and unity in overcoming the threat of kidnapping and violence.
