The Nigerian Flamingos kicked off their 2024 WAFU U17 Girls’ Cup campaign in style, delivering a resounding 9-0 victory over Niger Republic at the Ghanaian Soccer Centre of Excellence (GSCE) in Prampram on Thursday. The one-sided contest saw Shakirat Moshood net four goals, while Janet Akekoromowei scored a hat-trick, and Peace Effiong and Aisha Animashaun added one each.
The Flamingos, comprising players from the team that represented Nigeria at the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, showcased their strength and attacking prowess against the Nigeriens. Under the guidance of coach Bankole Olowookere, the Nigerian girls demonstrated their resilience and determination, dominating the match from start to finish.
The goals began pouring in early, with Animashaun opening the scoring in the 5th minute, followed by Moshood’s brilliant 35-yard shot two minutes later. The Nigerian team continued to press, with Moshood adding her second goal in the 13th minute, and Akekoromowei making it 4-0 shortly after. The Flamingos’ convincing victory sets the tone for their upcoming matches in the tournament.
