Nigerian track sensation Tobi Amusan showcased her prowess on Saturday night at the inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational held at the National Stadium, clinching victory in the women’s 100m hurdles with a remarkable time of 12.40 seconds, establishing a new world-leading record.
Despite trailing behind reigning world champion Jamaican Danielle Williams and American Nia Ali for the majority of the race, Amusan demonstrated her resilience and surged ahead in the final stretch, surpassing the previous world-leading time of 12.42 set by Tonea Marshall of the USA in April.
According to jamaica.loopnews.com, Williams secured second place with a time of 12.46 seconds, followed by Christina Clemens of the USA in third with 12.54. Jamaican athlete Yanique Thompson claimed fourth position with 12.59, while Nia Ali of the USA finished fifth in 12.65.
Amusan’s victory adds to her impressive track record, as she concluded the previous season on a high note by clinching the Diamond League women’s 100m hurdles title in Eugene, Oregon, marking her third consecutive win in the event. This achievement served as redemption following a challenging performance at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
Of note, Amusan previously made history in Oregon by clinching the world title in 2022 and setting a world record in the process.
In the men’s 110m hurdles event, USA’s Daniel Roberts led a 1-2 finish for his country with an impressive time of 13.17. Roberts, competing for the third time this season, secured a comfortable victory, with Eric Edwards finishing second in 13.33, narrowly edging out Jamaican athlete Lafranz Campbell, who clocked 13.37.
