An unidentified drainage worker from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) found himself trapped in the underground drainage system at the Onipanu area of Lagos State.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), confirmed the unfortunate event and stated that the agency swiftly initiated emergency response operations from its Onipanu Base to rescue the stranded individual.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations revealed that the worker, engaged in the crucial task of de-silting drainages to clear a blocked portion, inadvertently accessed the underground tunnel and became ensnared.
Further examination at the scene disclosed that the man, employed by LAMATA, was attempting to dislodge and remove debris from the underground drainage when he became trapped within the tunnel.
In an intensive effort to conduct a successful search and rescue operation, LASEMA’s response team, alongside other emergency responders, tirelessly worked to extricate the trapped worker from the confines of the underground drainage. The operation commenced at 16:25hrs and involved the utilization of advanced equipment to penetrate the manhole and facilitate the worker’s safe retrieval.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized that the rescue operation was ongoing, with collaborative efforts from officials of the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, LAMATA, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) all contributing to the concerted effort to rescue the trapped individual.
