The Lagos State Police Command has provided an update on the gas explosion that occurred in the Alayabiagba community in the Ajegunle-Apapa area of Lagos State. The number of injured persons in the incident has now risen to 22, according to the command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin. The explosion, which took place on Tuesday, left a pregnant woman and eight others with varying degrees of injuries.

The Head of Public Education at the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiru, explained that the explosion was triggered by a possible leak from one of the gas cylinders being traded in the area, which then set off a fire after breaking a high-tension cable. The fire resulted in the destruction of four commercial tricycles, six lock-up stores, and part of a bungalow building.

Hundeyin reassured the public that no lives were lost in the incident and that the injured individuals are receiving treatment at Gbagada General Hospital and Ajeromi General Hospital. The police presence at the scene was aimed at preventing any potential breakdown of law and order.

This incident follows a recent fire in Dosumu Market in the Lagos Island area, where at least 14 buildings were gutted by fire earlier this month.
