Pedro Rocha has been officially appointed as the new president of the Spanish Football Federation, succeeding former chief Luis Rubiales, who resigned last September.
Rocha, who has been serving as interim president amidst an ongoing investigation into corruption allegations involving the federation, emerged as the sole candidate for the upcoming election slated for May. The Spanish government intervened this week to oversee the crisis-ridden organization.
In an official statement, the federation announced Rocha’s confirmation as president, highlighting the support he received from the majority of assembly members during the institution’s meeting.
Despite the scrutiny surrounding Rocha’s interim leadership and the federation’s handling of the corruption case, the Spanish government’s National Sports Council (CSD) decided not to suspend him, enabling his appointment as president.
However, concerns have been raised regarding the RFEF’s management under Rocha’s tenure, with Spain’s primary sports tribunal highlighting decisions made “outside its authority” during this period. Consequently, the CSD opted to establish a committee to oversee the federation’s operations.
The situation has garnered attention from FIFA and UEFA, with both organizations expressing significant concern over potential government interference in the RFEF’s affairs. They have announced intentions to gather more information to assess the implications of the CSD’s intervention on the federation’s autonomy.
