The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, has taken decisive action following a recent incident involving Dana Airline, directing the suspension of the airline’s operations and mandating a comprehensive audit. This action comes in the wake of a Dana Air plane skidding off the runway at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Tuesday.
In a statement released by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Minister Keyamo emphasized the importance of ensuring safety and regulatory compliance within the aviation sector. He stated, “Recent incidents involving Dana Airline have raised serious concerns regarding both the safety and financial viability of their operations.”
Acknowledging the paramount importance of safeguarding the well-being of citizens and travelers, Minister Keyamo has instructed the immediate suspension of Dana Airline’s fleet pending a thorough audit. The audit will encompass safety protocols, maintenance procedures, and financial health to ensure full compliance with aviation regulations.
The incident on Tuesday prompted the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to temporarily close runway 18L/36R at Murtala Mohammed Airport in Lagos. However, FAAN’s emergency response team swiftly evacuated and recovered the aircraft, allowing the runway to reopen on Wednesday morning.
The Dana Air aircraft involved in the incident was en route from Abuja to Lagos, carrying 83 passengers and bearing registration number 5N BKI. The runway excursion at Lagos Murtala Mohammed Airport underscores the urgency of ensuring stringent safety measures and regulatory oversight within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
