Fourteen individuals suspected of affiliation with the Eiye secret cult found themselves remanded by an Ilorin Magistrate court following their alleged involvement in recent cult clashes within the Kwara State capital.
Over the weekend, disturbances erupted in Ilorin, resulting in the tragic death of one person and numerous injuries. The State Police Command took swift action, apprehending a total of 46 suspects connected to the cult-related violence.
The genesis of the conflict appears rooted in a disputed financial transaction. Reportedly, the victims, bearing injuries sustained during the altercation, approached the authorities after a failed N6,000 transaction at a Point of Sales (POS) terminal operated by one Ibrahim Rasheed. This inquiry allegedly led to a violent assault by the suspects, resulting in the theft of valuables, including phones worth N2.3 million, a Rolex wristwatch, N500,000 in cash, and damage to their vehicles.
Law enforcement investigations have implicated the suspects, along with others at large, in belonging to the Aiye and Eiye secret cults. Allegations against them include perpetrating widespread violence, targeting innocent civilians, and causing significant property damage in both Ilorin and its surroundings.
During the court proceedings, Magistrate Issa Agbetola denied the suspects’ bail applications, opting instead to remand them in the Mandala Correctional facility until their next hearing scheduled for May 8, 2024.
