In a groundbreaking announcement, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus, has confirmed the medicinal effectiveness of Hibiscus Sabdariffa, commonly known as ‘zobo,’ in treating hypertension. Renowned for his expertise in Cardiovascular Physiology, Professor Nwachukwu conducted extensive research and clinical trials involving both animal and human subjects to substantiate the therapeutic benefits of ‘zobo.’
During his 201st Inaugural Lecture titled “The Marriage between the Cardiovascular System and Hibiscus Sabariffa: Let no one put asunder,” Professor Nwachukwu compared the antihypertensive properties of ‘zobo’ with established pharmaceutical drugs. He highlighted its affordability, wide availability, and minimal side effects, positioning ‘zobo’ as a viable alternative for hypertension management.
However, Professor Nwachukwu cautioned against indiscriminate consumption of Hibiscus Sabdariffa, citing potential interactions with anti-malarial medications and stressing the adverse effects on the liver and kidneys at high doses. He recommended diligent blood pressure monitoring when combining ‘zobo’ with antihypertensive drugs.
Furthermore, Professor Nwachukwu called upon industrialists and investors to support the large-scale production and distribution of Hibiscus Sabdariffa beverages, particularly in rural areas. He underscored the economic potential of utilizing readily available and inexpensive raw materials.
Vice Chancellor Charles Igwe summarized the lecture’s significance across health, academia, and economics, urging the business community to capitalize on the opportunity presented by ‘zobo’ production. He emphasized the economic benefits and the utilization of the nation’s abundant resources.
