Nigeria, a nation of vast potential and a rich cultural heritage, grapples with a complex security crisis that now poses a significant threat to its societal fabric. This advanced report explores the key security challenges confronting Nigeria, examining their repercussions and potential remedies.

President Muhammadu Buhari, despite initial claims of victory over the Islamist militant group Boko Haram, now acknowledges its persistent insurgency. Boko Haram, originating in the north-east, has expanded its influence, exploiting poverty and security challenges to spread extremist ideologies. The group’s actions have led to nearly 350,000 deaths and displaced millions, establishing control over resources such as the Chad Basin’s fish market. The situation is exacerbated by ungoverned spaces in Nigeria, allowing rural communities to suffer without fear of reprisal. Additionally, the emergence of a splinter faction allied with the Islamic State, known as the Islamic State’s West Africa Province, adds complexity to the challenge.

Clashes Between Herders and Farmers
Persistent violent disputes between nomadic herders and farmers revolve around land use, water, and grazing routes. Climate change and desertification intensify tensions as herders move southward in search of pasture. Thousands have lost their lives in clashes over limited resources, with Benue State witnessing some of the deadliest attacks resulting from these disputes.

Banditry and Unknown Gunmen
Rampant banditry, characterized by armed criminal groups engaging in kidnapping, robbery, and violence, poses a significant threat. The emergence of “unknown gunmen” further complicates matters, perpetrating attacks on security forces, civilians, and infrastructure. Ineffective law enforcement and porous borders contribute to the proliferation of these criminal elements.

Secessionist Movements
In the south-east, secessionist groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) advocate for an independent state, leading to clashes with security forces. The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) also seeks secession, posing a challenge to national unity.

Kidnappings and Abductions
Kidnappings for ransom have become commonplace, affecting both ordinary citizens and prominent figures. Schools, villages, and highways are vulnerable, with the abduction of schoolchildren garnering international attention and devastating consequences for education and national morale.

Nigeria’s security landscape demands urgent attention. Addressing socio-economic factors, enhancing law enforcement capabilities, and fostering regional cooperation are crucial steps toward restoring stability. President Tinubu’s administration faces the daunting task of safeguarding lives, preserving democracy, and rebuilding trust amid mounting insecurity.
