Renowned football strategist, Jose Mourinho, has lauded the officiating standards witnessed at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON), expressing a preference for AFCON over European football.
The former Chelsea and Roma coach emphasized the commendable integrity displayed in AFCON officiating, specifically highlighting the equitable use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. Mourinho urged Europe to adopt Africa’s transparent approach, suggesting that VAR decisions at AFCON are unbiased, devoid of favoritism towards affluent or renowned teams.
Mourinho advocated for the relocation of VAR headquarters to Africa, citing the tournament’s success in fostering fair play and impartial refereeing. In his observations, he underscored AFCON’s commitment to employing VAR judiciously, irrespective of a team’s financial prowess or celebrity status.
“I have immersed myself in AFCON more than European football. They are setting an example for honesty. In AFCON, VAR is employed precisely as it should be,” remarked Mourinho, as reported by CFC News Report. “The system is not manipulated to benefit financially dominant or popular teams. This is why every team showcased their best, knowing VAR is accessible to all. They even heed players’ concerns if the referee overlooks an incident. In Europe, such pleas result in red cards for coaches or players. The VAR headquarters should be situated in CAF.”
As the African Cup of Nations reaches its pinnacle today, the clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the hosts, Cote D’Ivoire, promises a captivating conclusion to a tournament marked by fair competition and stringent officiating, according to DAILY POST reports.
