A shocking turn of events unfolded in the Ikeja High Court on Tuesday, as a 25-year-old man, Ayoko Oluwatobi, attempted to take his own life. Oluwatobi, who is facing trial on several criminal charges, appeared before Justice Hakeem Oshodi. As the bail application for Oluwatobi was being presented, pandemonium broke out when he attempted to jump from the upper floor of the court building, directly opposite the second gate. This shocking incident resulted in chaos, and it remains unclear what may have prompted Oluwatobi’s actions.
The prosecution’s reply to the bail application alleged that the defendant, Oluwatobi, was a “flight risk” and had the potential to interfere with the prosecution’s witnesses. Justice Oshodi then adjourned the case until April 9. This did not sit well with Oluwatobi, who started tapping the prosecution witnesses on the back and calling them his friends, insisting that he should be released. As he stepped out of the courtroom, he began headbutting the wall, shouting “I want to die” and “I can’t wait until April.” In one swift move, he climbed the window in an attempt to jump down.
As Oluwatobi attempted to jump from the two-story building, police officers and Correctional Facility personnel attached to the court were able to intervene and restrain him. Thanks to the fact that he was wearing handcuffs, he was unable to jump and was successfully restrained. According to an eyewitness, Oluwatobi had allegedly caused serious bodily harm and other crimes against one Obinna Nosike. The case remains pending and the circumstances around Oluwatobi’s behavior and motivations remain unclear.
