On the latest episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, comedian Alibaba claimed that he had created most of the jokes told by other Nigerian comedians.
He also said that many comedians have been “recycling” his jokes, but they still don’t acknowledge his contributions to the industry. When asked about his role in the comedy industry, Alibaba said he had been a mentor to many comedians and had taught them a lot about the craft. However, he said some of them felt he hadn’t done enough for them, despite his efforts. He also mentioned that the comedy scene was becoming over-saturated, with many comedians now resorting to insults and profanity to get laughs.
Alibaba said that he wished the comedians would focus on creating original content, rather than just copying what he and others had done in the past. He added that the audience deserved better, and he hoped the comedians would start to take their craft more seriously. It was clear from his comments that Alibaba was passionate about comedy, and he wanted to see the industry grow and thrive.
According to Alibaba, many comedians are using jokes he has told in the past without giving him credit. He said that in some cases, the comedians have even turned his jokes into entire skits. He gave one specific example of a joke he told in 1988 that was later turned into a skit.
He said he has no problem with people being inspired by his work, but he would like them to acknowledge the source of their inspiration. Alibaba added that giving credit to the creators of the content is not only the right thing to do, but it also helps to build a culture of respect and collaboration in the comedy industry.
